Surrounded by lions…

Have you ever thought what it would be like to be surrounded by lions? There’s a movie I’ve noticed (not watched) that had Idris Elba in it about his family being stuck in a broken down car in Africa and they are set upon by a lion or two. It would be a terrifying thing.

Today’s photo was shot after dark at the temple of Luxor. There are two major temples in Luxor, Egypt: the temple of Luxor and the temple of Karnak. Between the two there is a distance of a couple miles (I think) and there was a causeway that connected the two temples. All along that causeway were sculptures of lion-headed sphinxes, some 2000 of them. Many of them have been removed over the millennia and others were just destroyed by weather, vandals, or something else. Some, however, are still there, silently guarding the passageway as they have for nearly 3000 years.

Thankfully, not one of them growled at me.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: in 1865, Abraham Lincoln was laid to rest in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois.

His funeral train had traveled through 180 cities and seven states before reaching Springfield. At each stop, mourners paid their respects to Lincoln, who had been assassinated on April 14. Lincoln’s son Willie, who died at age 11 from typhoid fever in 1862 and had originally been buried in Washington, D.C. while Lincoln was serving as president, was interred next to his father in the family plot that same day. – The History Channel

TRIVIA FOR TODAY: Beekeepers in France noticed that their bees were producing honey in unusual shades of green and blue. After investigating, the beekeepers discovered that the bees had been eating remnants of M&M candy shells from a nearby factory.
