The other day I was witness to a spectacular sight! We were out walking the dog and I had my camera along at my wife’s request, just “in case” we saw some birds that I could photograph for her (she’s become a “birder” BIG TIME!)
Imagine my surprise when I saw the bird in today’s photo. For a long, long time, ever since Newton described gravity, people have tried to figure out a way to defy gravity. We have dreams about it: about being able to fly. In my flying dreams, I don’t have to flap my arms or even stretch them out. I just decide to “fly” up to the ceiling and I rise effortlessly, immune to Newton’s law of gravity! It’s a great feeling when it happens. I wish I could have that dream every night!
Well, people haven’t managed to do it. But this bird did. Look at it! It’s not flapping it’s wings…go ahead, look at it for the next ten minutes and you’ll never once see it move its wings!!! Not once!!! And the distance between it and the surface of the water won’t vary even a pixel!!! How does it do it? I don’t know. It refused to speak to me!
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On this day in 1945, “Il Duce,” Benito Mussolini, and his mistress, Clara Petacci, are shot by Italian partisans who had captured the couple as they attempted to flee to Switzerland.
The 61-year-old deposed former dictator of Italy was established by his German allies as the figurehead of a puppet government in northern Italy during the German occupation toward the close of the war. As the Allies fought their way up the Italian peninsula, defeat of the Axis powers all but certain, Mussolini considered his options. Not wanting to fall into the hands of either the British or the Americans, and knowing that the communist partisans, who had been fighting the remnants of roving Italian fascist soldiers and thugs in the north, would try him as a war criminal, he settled on escape to a neutral country.
He and his mistress made it to the Swiss border, only to discover that the guards had crossed over to the partisan side. Knowing they would not let him pass, he disguised himself in a Luftwaffe coat and helmet, hoping to slip into Austria with some German soldiers. His subterfuge proved incompetent, and he and Petacci were discovered by partisans and shot, their bodies then transported by truck to Milan, where they were hung upside down and displayed publicly for revilement by the masses.
TRIVIA FOR TODAY: Grover Cleveland is the only candidate ever to be elected to one term, defeated for a second term, and then elected again four years later. Thus, he became both the 22ndpresident and the 24th president.
