I’d read and heard about prickly pear all my life and I’d even seen some before, but didn’t know what they were.
Over the past weekend, we went to visit the Petaluma adobe of Mexican General Vallejo. It was quite interesting. One of the most fascinating things was the hedge or prickly pear cactus that formed a half circle around the front yard. If it was there originally or not, I don’t know, but it could form a very effective corral for cattle … or at least for people!
This time of year, the fruit was growing and in some cases, looked ripe. I have no idea what it tastes like and I don’t think I want to know. Have any of our readers ever tried it?
From what I read, it is edible, but one must be careful not to ingest any spines. It can also be used, according to Wikipedia, to create vodka and other drinks.
So, if you want to have a home brewery, you may consider planting a bunch of prickly pear and havin’ at it!!!
TRIVIA FOR TODAY: the average cost of air travel is about $60 per hour, but using one of the phones on the plane for an hour can run as much as $160 per hour.
