No, that’s not what I meant. I’m not talking about someone called “Driftwood Art” as in “Deadeye Dick” or “Susy Homemaker.” And no, I’m not talking to someone named Art as if to say, “Well you ninny…it’s driftwood, Art!” I’m talking about art made from driftwood!
The people of Mendocino are pretty clever. At least some of them are. There is always plenty of driftwood piling up on the coast around Mendocino and some folks have found pieces of driftwood and assembled them together to make works of art. At one point as you walk along the main street, there are benches for people to sit on (or at least to admire) that are made out of driftwood…and faces have been carved into some of the larger parts. But at the west end of the street before it bends back northward, is a house surrounded by a wooden, picket fence. In the yard are lots of flowers and some driftwood art pieces. Some of the driftwood art is clearly flowers. I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that they’re supposed to be something like driftwood sunflowers. In addition, there are others, too, like today’s photo.
I don’t know for sure what this is supposed to be, but you can see some of the driftwood flowers, and what to me looks like a horse’s head. What do you think it is? Do you see something else?
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: in 1945, Hideki Tojo, the Japanese prime minister for most of WW2, attempted suicide rather than face a war crimes tribunal. His effort was unsuccessful, however, and he was ultimately executed by hanging.
TRIVIA FOR TODAY: much of a tree can die without killing the entire tree. In fact, the wood in the center of the tree is dead.
