Explosion!

There is so much power in this universe!  When you consider the power in a supernova in space, the power of the sun on a normal day.  The power of gravity is not to be trifled with – or broken.  And the power confined within the bonds of the atom is so great that it could blow us away.  There are, of course, other forms of power, too.  There is the power of hope, faith and love.  Perhaps they are the greatest of all.

One of the places where you can see power at work is at the coast, especially a rocky coast when the tide is in and the surf is up.  I mentioned about a week or so ago about a recent visit we paid to Mendocino on the northern California coast.  As we walked out on the headlands, in the distance we could see sea spray flying up into the air.  We’d not see that before on the headlands, and we gradually made our way to where it was happening.  When we got there, we discovered a rocky inlet that was enclosed on three-sided and the surf was just POUNDING it mercilessly!  The waves would come in and with a thunderous roar, they spent themselves on the rock walls.  The walls were probably about 20 feet high, so that will give you some idea of how high the spray was flying!!!!  This was what we saw:

Thar she blows!!!!!

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: in 1814, the Battle of Fort Henry in Baltimore harbor took place.  It was during that battle that Francis Scott Key penned the words to what has come to be known as The Star Spangled Banner.  The words were paired with a popular drinking tune, and that, my fellow citizens, is how we got our national anthem!

TRIVIA FOR TODAY: Chinese folklore says that peaches not only keep the lungs healthy, but particular peaches that were grown in a mythical garden were the fruit of eternal life.
